Confused.com’s Easter Holiday at Home!
Publication Date: Tuesday, March 04, 2008
With the Easter holidays considerably nearer than the horizon, many of you will have planned to get away for a break. But what if you haven’t? Although a change is as good as a rest, a rest is often as good as a rest too. So for those not spending long hours in cars or on planes, packing and unpacking (twice), checking in and checking out, here are some ideas as to how you might bring the holiday to you and your family over the Easter season.
A bit of egg-citement
A fun activity that needn’t take you beyond the limits of your own street is a treasure hunt for the kids, or indeed an Easter egg hunt. This is the type of thing that can involve as many or as few people as you like. And, whilst the little ‘uns are decoding their clues and hunting for their eggs, the grown ups can get together and talk about grown-up stuff. Everybody wins!
You can even make your own Easter eggs if you’re so inclined. This is easily done with some egg moulds and a few bars of your own favourite chocolate. You can buy sets of Easter egg moulds (there’s a set for £2.99 for sale on the Lakeland website), or even re-use the plastic containers found in many regular Easter eggs. Simply melt your chocolate, and when it’s beginning to cool but still runny, brush it onto the insides of the mould. They should set pretty quickly. When you’ve done both halves, you can apply more melted chocolate or icing to the edges in order to bind them together.
When melting chocolate, don’t put it straight onto the hob, as it will burn in the pan. Instead boil some water in a pan, put the chocolate into a heat-proof bowl, and lower the bowl into the water to heat the chocolate more gently. Be very careful melting chocolate in the microwave, as it can be difficult to gauge the temperature, and could end up getting too hot.
Turn your home into an arena!
Another great way to transform your home into an excellent holiday destination is to hire inflatable toys for the garden, assuming you have enough space. And you needn’t limit yourself to a bouncy castle. Tap ‘inflatable game hire’ and your area into a search engine, and hopefully you’ll be able to hire all sorts of stuff… A bungee run, sumo wrestling with ‘fat suits’, inflatable boxing with a bouncy ring and ludicrously oversized gloves, and gladiator duelling with inflatable podia and pugil sticks!
Confused.com staff member Owe Carter tells us: “I went to a party which had gladiator duelling in the garden, and a knock-out contest. I got drawn against a chap in his late seventies. I was wondering how to throw the fight, as I don’t have it in me to batter a senior with a pugil stick. Turns out I didn’t need to. After we got up on our podia, he asked me if I had a pocket, and if I didn’t mind looking after his glasses. I told him ‘of course not’, leant forward to take them from his hand… Which is when he struck me with his pugil stick, sending me plummeting off my podium. Sly old dog!”
Adventures in cyberspace
You may not be lucky with the weather, however. If the sun does not choose to sport his headwear, then perhaps you could take a holiday on the internet. For example you could take a tour of the Second Life 3D virtual world. With Second Life, you can go sightseeing in spectacular spots, meet interesting people, without ever having to get out of your chair (except, of course, for the usual breaks). Plus, you won’t be leaving a large carbon treadmark. Hoorah!
