It’s A Dog’s Life – How To Pamper Your Pooch For Less
Publication Date: Monday, July 07, 2008
A lot of people considered Leona Helmsley to be barking mad when she left a massive $12million to her dog Trouble in her will. And last month a New York judge echoed this sentiment, when she reduced the inheritance from its original sum to a paltry $2million – on the grounds of Helmsley being mentally unfit when she executed her will.
Woof!
Leona Helmsley – widely known as the ‘Queen of Mean’ – was a billionaire hotel operator and property investor, and is legendary for having also been a tyrannical megalomaniac. Two of her four grandchildren were cut off from her will, reportedly for having failed to name their children after Leona’s late husband. Her white Maltese, on the other hand, was bequeathed a $12million fortune.
But will the poor pooch be able to scrape by on a measly $2million – just over £1million Sterling? With the cost of living on the rise, the aptly named Trouble will have to tighten her collar.
Roll over!
Carl Lekic, Trouble’s guardian, could do worse than trawling voucher sites online, such as Voucher Heaven - ideal for digging up discounts on dog food and other pet-related products. Also, Pet Supermarket offer free delivery when you buy over £39 worth of shopping – so it makes sense to buy your food, treats, toys and flea powder in one go. And if you can have access to a wholesaler (e.g. a friend with a cash & carry card), then buying food in bulk could save you a bundle.
Play dead!
Trouble may also want to consider pet insurance. Though routine examinations and inoculations are not usually covered by policies, if a dog falls seriously ill then operations can cost thousands. One member of the Confused.com team told us this heart-warming tail (sorry, tale):
“Our dog would have cost us somewhere in the region of £6,000 this year. Large breeds with deep chests suffer from what is call ‘bloat’ or gastric torsion (like horses). If not treated immediately it is a killer. Without insurance our beloved Ted would be dead!”
Although this is unlikely to affect tiny Trouble, our mini Maltese, who knows what operations may be required if she is accidentally trodden on? Plus, she has received a handful of death threats on account of her fortune – so in her case, pet insurance is a must!
Don’t forget that you can also find pet insurance through Confused.com, at prices that will (bow-wow-)wow you!
